A smart nerd discovers idea X, like say, “prediction markets”
Idea X is a really good idea. It’s really useful. But normal people hate the aesthetic of the nerds. They don’t want to be like them. They don’t want more of them. So they reject the idea.
“Ad hominim!!!” cries the nerd. But it does not matter. The idea is rejected. The normies are safe from the tyranny of the rats.
Centuries later, a normie discovers the same idea. They call it r/agedlikemilk and r/agedlikewine. It’s the same thing, but it has a better aesthetic. It feels good. It spreads.
“we got it first!!!” cry the nerds. But it does not matter. Each culture gets to write its own history. This is a feature, not a bug.
